Distinguished French soprano; aunt of singer Mireille Mathieu.
Remarkably little biographical information is available about a singer so important at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. She was born in 1891 and she lived a very long life; with one Italian article suggesting that she was still alive in 1988.
Mathieu was a major singer at the Paris Opéra and was married to Georges Hirsch, director of the theatre. She was last heard at the Opéra in 1949 in Faust.
In her later years she became a much-respected teacher at the Conservatoire National de Paris.
This is a very early French sepia postcard of "Madeleine Mathieu dans La Tosca", nicely signed and dated (1919) in black fountain pen ink across the image. Two crescent-shaped handling "dings" in the top right corner of the image (greatly exaggerated by the scan), otherwise in good condition.
