Paris-born film director.

In 1937 Polanski’s family moved back to Poland, where they were eventually captured and imprisoned by the Nazis, along with millions of other Polish Jews. His mother died in a concentration camp, but Polański avoided incarceration there, escaped the Kraków Ghetto and spent the war wandering the countryside of Europe.

It was during this period that Polanski became a devoted cinephile, seeking escape from the reality of a brutal world in cinemas whenever possible.

In 1954 Polanski was one of six applicants accepted into the rigorous director's course at Lodz's prestigious State Film School and in 1957 he made his first student film.

His credits over the years have included Repulsion (1965), Rosemary's Baby (AAN 1968), Macbeth (1971), Chinatown (AAN 1974), The Tenant (1976), Tess (AAN 1979), Frantic (1988), Death and the Maiden (1994), The Pianist (2002, winning an Oscar) and Oliver Twist (2005).

Polanski is as famous for his lurid private life as for his films. His wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson Family in 1968. His flight from Americafollowing a 1978 guilty plea to statutory rape of a 13 year old girl continues to make headlines, tarnishing his reputation as a film director. Polanski faces imminent arrest and a 50 year jail sentence should he ever return to the United States.
