Gielgud, John   (1904-2000)
Gielgud, John Oscar-winning English actor, most famous for his stage work, notably in Shakespearean roles (he is generally regarded as having been one of the greatest Hamlets of the Twentieth Century).
On the 21st October 1953 John Gielgud was arrested for homosexual importuning in a public toilet in Chelsea. He was fined £10. Unluckily for Gielgud, an Evening Standard reporter was in court and the story made the front page.
Gielgud’s humiliation was very public and very painful and he was afraid what the audience reaction might be the next time he appeared on stage. In fact, A Day By The Sea (1954) was brought to a complete standstill by applause when he made his first appearance.
This is a rare black and white vintage photograph of Gielgud (5.5" x 3.5") in A Day By The Sea. The actor has signed, identified and dated the photograph ("John Gielgud, Best wishes, A Day by the Sea, 1954") to the lower margin in blue fountain pen ink.
