Lucan, Arthur (Old Mother Riley)   (1887-1954)
Lucan, Arthur (Old Mother Riley) British music hall comedian, who became famous playing Old Mother Riley, a comic Irishwoman.
An early vintage 1940s album page (6.25" x 4.75"), with an extraordinary (and possibly unique) signature in black ink.
Lucan was a comedy megastar in the 1940s and was paying the price of fame, asked over and over again for his autograph. He signals his boredom in this unique instance by first writing "Just to be different" and then
offering a whimsical variation in his signature. Normally the  "A" of "Arthur" is large and flowery, as is "L" of  "Lucan". Here he has made the last letter of his first name and surname large and flowery. He has done the same with his wife's name, for whom he has also signed. There can be no doubt that this is Lucan's unique "rulered" handwriting. I've never seen a similar example of his autograph.
