Rennie, Michael   (1909-1971)
Rennie, Michael Lean, good-looking British actor who became a star working for Gainsborough, but now probably best remembered for playing Klaatu in the cult sci-fi film The Day The Earth Stood Still (1952).
A
great Michael Rennie rarity - an original vintage 1940s Gainsborough Pictures black and white publicity photograph (9" x 7.25"), with the studio stamp to the reverse. The photograph is signed in a mixture of purple and blue inks and is inscribed to Renée (Gilbert), with whom Michael Rennie had a very long term relationship, while married to Joan England. They had a son called John, who became a film producer, using the name John Taylor to avoid any accusation of nepotism.
The remarkable thing is that Michael Rennie did not marry Renée Gilbert (the sister of film director Lewis Gilbert) when he divorced Joan England in 1945, but went on to marry the actress Margaret McGrath in 1947 (this marriage too ended in divorce in 1960).
Michael Rennie begins the inscription in purple ink ("For
Renée, my very favourite publicity hound, with love") and ends with a first name signature in blue ink. Interestingly, he starts to write "Rennie", which is how he was known to close friends and colleagues, crosses out the "R" and clearly thinks "Michael" is more suitable, given the nature of their relationship.
(This photograph was obtained from John Rennie himself.)
